Last November I had the opportunity to go on a spearfishing expedition with Neritic Diving while staying on a liveabord in Baja California Sur. Thanks to my amazing boyfriend who has the best job ever (most of the time) as a spearfishing guide, I am very grateful that we get to go on all these epic adventures.
The Journey
Getting there was an undertaking but it was worth it! We flew to La Paz and then we had to drive for about 3 hours to get to a little panga. We loaded all our gear, luggage and provisions for the week on the panga and had to ride about 45 minutes to get to the boat where we would be living on for a few weeks. The boat was beautiful! It was a sportfish with 2 rooms and 4 beds and a few other beds in the galley where the crew slept. We were 5 people plus a chef and a captain in total.
What followed was just magical, epic views, blue water, tons of fish, fire sunsets and delicious food. I even got the chance to go spearfishing and swim with sea lions! I caught a few yellowtail which the chef prepared fresh sashimi and ceviche with. I caught a colorado snapper and cubera snappers. The guys got giant broomtail groupers, wahoos and yellowtails to name a few.
Ocean 2 Table
We’re so lucky that our oceans provide so much and it’s always a great feeling catching our own food and enjoying the fresh feast with friends.
Here are a few pictures from the delicious meals the chef was making for us everyday. We had hamachi sashimi and ceviche, fresh wahoo sashimi, lobster pasta with octopus, fresh grouper, fish tacos and the list goes on!
Spearfishing
I do spearfish! I choose what I catch by size (sexually mature), species (not endangered), behavior (not reproducing), time of year (season) and area (unprotected). I fish to share with our families, friends and guests.
I'm still new to spearfishing and I'm lucky that my boyfriend has a background in marine biology and is spearfishing guide, he’s able to share his knowledge and teaches me a lot about everything fishy.
I really enjoyed spearfishing in Mexico and was able to shoot a few fish even in shallow waters. As you can see from the videos on my YouTube Channel, I swam in a school of yellowtail, caught some snapper and colorado snapper.
I feel like catching fish is the fun and easy part. But the real work is when you have to prepare and cook after a long day of being out on the water. It’s not all fun and games all the time but the reward is pretty sweet.
I made a video practicing my filleting skills on Colorado Snapper and shared all the steps I followed .
This was my side of the trip but if you want to see the more hardcore spearfishing and what the guys did >> reach out to CJ Duffie from Neritic Diving and check out the videos!
