Goodbye Glasses - ReLEx SMILE Eye Surgery

A year ago I said goodbye to my glasses forever and got ReLEx SMILE Eye Surgery. I had been wearing glasses since college and contacts for about a year. I never really considered eye surgery but I was always complaining that the contacts made my eyes super dry to the point where people would often ask me at the office if I was crying.

At first, Dr. Hamid suggested I try only wearing one contact lens in my dominant eye and if I was able to adapt, then he would only operate that eye. Monovision is another option to provide good near acuity without compromising distance vision.

A few months later, I booked an appointment for a ReLEx SMILE procedure and it changed my life.

The surgery went super smoothly and only lasted a few seconds. The next morning I was driving myself to the follow up appointment and less than 24 hours later my vision was 20/20.  Unlike Lasik, there was no downtime and no flap related complications, therefore I was back to my normal physical activities the next day. In fact, only one week later I was back in the water, swimming in the ocean.

I’m so happy I went ahead with the procedure! Since then I’ve never had to worry about forgetting my contacts at night, losing one while diving or getting saltwater in my eyes.

Even for photography, as Alfred Eisenstaedt once said, “The important thing is not the camera but the eye.” Now I can focus 100% on being present and enjoy every moment above and below the surface without worrying about missing anything.

ReLEx SMILE (3rd generation)

They create in the cornea a mini lens (lenticule) of optical correction, which is then gently removed by an incision of less than 2.7 mm. This technique, less invasive, includes several advantages unlike the PRK and LASIK.
